Derek Bertolas, CPA CMPA and Jennifer Pekula, CPA

Planning their own financial future, Derek and Jennifer founded their own financial and tax planning and preparation practice.

Derek Bertolas had the vision of starting his own tax and financial planning practice when he left the CPA firm where he had worked with Jennifer Pekula. When he suggested they partner to start their own practice , Jennifer was cautious, but not reluctant. "We didn't so much know what we had to do, as much as what not to do," they recall.

They opened in 1999 in a 750 square foot office space in an Andover strip mall then acquired Andover Tax Service and 3800 square feet in their third year of business. They were quickly outgrowing their space again when they learned that the City of Ramsey was offering tax increment financing to build business in Ramsey. They found the land and designed their two-story building with the intention of having enough room to grow in their 5,000 square foot, second-floor offices and building revenue by dividing and leasing the first floor. Derek says their growth is like a goldfish in a bowl, "the bigger the bowl, the bigger the fish grows."

Bertolas and Pekula currently has a staff of eleven, which increases during tax season when they hire several temporary personnel. Their client list has grown from thirty to five hundred business clients and 1500 individuals, preparing approximately 1500 tax returns each year. they continue to experience 7.5%-10% growth each year. Their goal ... "to not lose any clients."

Bertolas explains what sets them apart from other CPA firms, "We don't take the cookie cutter approach. We give every client what they need. We're flexible to their needs and provide a personal touch."
